The biology lab at the Mather School is shown in this undated photo. The Mather School was one of several efforts to educate freed slaves and their families in South Carolina in the years during and after the Civil War. Penn School, founded six years earlier, was one of the first schools in the country for freed slaves. It evolved into the Technical College of the Lowcountry.
