I was born in Beaufort in 1953. I remember going into town every Saturday with my grandmother and my grand uncle Solomon, after they had sold vegetables door to door all over Beaufort and Port Royal. We would park in the old Piggly Wiggly parking lot on Port Republic Street, and I was free to explore while Grandmother shopped. My first stop was always the old library located on Craven and Carteret streets. I had to get my weekly supply of books, the things I loved most, next to food.
