I was born in Beaufort in 1953. I remember going into town every Saturday with my grandmother and my grand uncle Solomon, after they had sold vegetables door to door all over Beaufort and Port Royal. We would park in the old Piggly Wiggly parking lot on Port Republic Street, and I was free to explore while Grandmother shopped. My first stop was always the old library located on Craven and Carteret streets. I had to get my weekly supply of books, the things I loved most, next to food.

I grew up in Bluffton, but I have lived in Beaufort four times — as an infant, a 22-year-old beginning teacher, a divorcee raising three children and returned in 2000 as a retiree. I just keep coming back. Beaufort has been good to me and for me each time I have called it home.

Andy and I will always treasure time we've spent together on walks around Beaufort. We love trading stories, especially ghost stories.

Beaufort — for so long a prized jewel to be sought, conquered, then occupied with pride and pleasure. Now, no longer hidden treasure — a homeplace beckoning — once discovered, never forgotten.

My first experience in Beaufort was cold and wet. I had come down on spring break from college to see a girl (Mary, now my wife.) We had dated a couple of times, and she had invited me to go sailing. My god, I thought ... she's beautiful and rich ... she has a sailboat.

Ecology, flora, history, culture, shrimping, salt air and community brought me here. I shall stay.

There is so much to do. Something for everyone. And, of course, the hospitality and friendly people.
