EXPO 2011 awards ceremony slated for Oct. 31

Award winners of the EXPO 2011 Design Competition will be announced at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31 at the Verdier House, 801 Bay Street. The ceremony, reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

EXPO 2011—The Future Form of Beaufort, a collaborative design competition sponsored by Beaufort County, the City of Beaufort, Historic Beaufort Foundation and the Beaufort Three-Century Project, challenged designers, architects, and planners to explore Beaufort’s historic form and interpret what a future form might look like on one of three designated sites in the historic district. The entries include expertly crafted architectural and site drawings and models.

The awards ceremony will include remarks by officials from the four partnering organizations and a brief overview of the exhibition by smart growth expert Demetri Baches. Baches developed an international reputation in New Urbanism ranks while a director at Duany Plater-Zybert & Company and now resides in Beaufort.

Three $1,000 cash awards will be presented—two determined by a jury for Best Single Structure in Show and Best Community Plan in Show, and the third People’s Choice determined by the general public after viewing the exhibition. A reception and light refreshments will follow the presentations.

The purpose of EXPO 2011 was to inspire thinking and examine concepts of building with regard to a more sustainable future. The participants brought a wealth of design expertise and creativity to this project, with each of the sixteen entries approaching the competition criteria from a different perspective, though some themes emerged and are prevalent throughout the exhibition.

EXPO 2011 is currently on display 10 a.m. ot 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and People’s Choice voting will continue through the close of the exhibit on Saturday, October 30th.
